The General Rule of Motivation (GROOM)

So what makes people happy? Many people think that wealth can bring happiness. This is partly correct because there are many wealthy people who are not happy and there are many people who are not wealthy but are very happy. Happiness is in the state of the mind. In life we have our ups and downs and it is perfectly okay to be angry, sad, fear depending on the situation. But what we want is for us to generally be happy regardless of the situations life put us in.
Perhaps happiness is related somehow to mental strength. As long as you can withstand the calamity that befalls you with mental strength then perhaps you will be happy afterwards. But mental strength is something hard to measure. Is it some innate ability or is it something that can be practiced and improved? Whatever the cause of happiness is, I want to have something that we can work on and improved so as to make us a happier person.
Have you ever heard of a phrase ‘don’t look at the person above you for it will make you jealous of what that person has but look at the person below you so that you will be grateful of what you have’? Perhaps the keyword to be happy is by being grateful. God has designed us in the most amazing way and we have built-in capability to go through life. We know how to work and make money, we know how to make friends, we know how to bring up a family and we know so many other things to go through this life. Of course each individual is unique and is different from other individual. That is the reason that some people make more money than other people, some people can be say to be more successful than other people. No matter how much money you make and how successful you are, if you count the blessings given by God to you in this life, then you will always be happy.
Even if you are poor, you still have your health. Even if you fail in a business venture, you still have your time and can start over. Even if you are sick, you still have family and friends who care for you and you still have a chance to get better. Whatever problem you are in, there will always be a solution. Some people cannot see the solution to their problem simply because they are not willing to accept the solution. For example, many problems with people nowadays are due to shortage of money. Perhaps the solution is to utilize the asset that person has. How about selling the house? Or selling the car? Or even work harder just to meet the shortage of money? If people are not willing to accept those solutions, then they will think they are doomed with no solution at all.
Everything that we have in this world is given by God to us. Our money, our house, our car, our clothes, even our bodies including our eyes, ears, noses, mouths and hands, everything is given by god. Someone might argue that he got everything that he has because he is smart. Well then who has given the brain that makes him so smart? That answer is again God.
The same can be said to be true regarding what you don’t have. Everything that you don’t have, it is because God has destined that thing not to be yours. Perhaps by not having what you want is better for you. You don’t know but God knows. So just be patient of what you don’t have. Pray to God to replace whatever that you want but don’t get with something better. This is his story.
In Islam, God likes a person who is grateful and the reward for the grateful person is blessing from God as stipulated as follows: “And when your Lord proclaimed: If ye give thanks, I will give you more; but if ye are thankless, lo! My punishment is dire.” (Ibrahim: 7). I believe being grateful for what you have and being patient for what you don’t have are universal deeds which will make you happy regardless of your religion. So start counting your blessings and I wish you all to be a happier person.
